Server End of Life
Posted March 17, 2026
Not exactly a blog post, but still an important update.
Too long; did not read
My dedicated server is shutting down the 17th of May 2026, which will take the following offline:
- Dedicated game servers
- serve.realsgii2.dev
Those of you who talk to me often know that I have a dedicated server in New York that I use for a majority of my custom hosted solutions.
The server will be shut down on the 17th of May 2026.
The following services I provide will be taken offline due to this change:
- Light file hosting provided by serve.realsgii2.dev (see next section)
- Dedicated servers such as the American Truck Simulator convoy
- These will be replaced with smaller, VPS-based solutions that will be taken offline when not in use.
- Anything hooked on my internal Okta-like authentication service
Replacing serve.realsgii2.dev
This was an instance of Zipline used to host small files and images that I intended to distribute to other people or share between devices like my personal computer and this server. It was hosted on the server itself.
Because I still need a similar service and have nowhere to host it, I will be merging all of its data with cdn.realsgii2.dev, a Backblaze instance.
Since this move is to clear old projects, data, and to remove costs and free up space, cdn.realsgii2.dev will also be undergoing a major overhaul.
I will build a lightweight UI to manage it and possibly allow users to browse files that I host as archives. The size of the CDN's content is around 8 GiB, mainly because it was my attempt of making a ShareX server back in 2020. Most of the data that is no longer in active use will be deleted. This will mainly affect screenshots and some videos sent around 2020-2022. Some data on older, non-maintained websites may also be affected. Projects that I know still use it (such as PathOS) will have its data retained.
Sometime during Q3 or Q4 of this year, serve.realsgii2.dev will become the primary URL of the Backblaze instance, and cdn.realsgii2.dev will become one of its CNames.
Why this change?
The dedicated server was an absolute steal. $60 per month for 32 GiB of RAM is absolutely amazing. However, I'm not putting those resources to good use. Over this Year to Date it has only been used for authentication and serve.realsgii2.dev. I would only ever have two game servers hosted at once on it. Keeping a conscientious spending mindset is ideal (esp. with my new cost of education) so I am eliminating a lot of unneeded costs. For example, I have already cancelled my paid plans with Vercel and Adobe. With just these three services alone, I would save a couple thousand dollars a year.
